Microsoft Word 365 is a powerful tool. But for screen reader users, the first screen can feel a bit busy. This guide will help you navigate the Startup Screen (also called the Welcome Screen) easily.
Opening Microsoft Word
To start, press the Windows Key, type “Word,” and hit Enter.
Screen Reader Voice: “Word, App, press right to switch preview.”
Once the app opens, you are on the Startup Screen. This is a “Backstage View” where you choose how to start your work.
Choosing a Template
When Word opens, your focus usually lands on the Templates list. Templates are pre-made layouts.
- The Blank Document: This is what most students need. It is a fresh, white page.
- Navigation: Use your Left and Right Arrow keys to move through different templates like “Letter” or “Resume.”
Screen Reader Voice: “Blank document, list item, 1 of 10.”
Action: To start a new project, just press Enter on “Blank Document.”
Finding Your Recent Work
If you want to open a file you worked on yesterday, you don’t need to search through folders.
- Press the Tab key until you hear “Recent.”
- Use the Down Arrow to scroll through your list of old files.
Screen Reader Voice: “Recent, list box, History.docx, 1 of 5.”
Action: Press Enter to open the selected file instantly.
Exploring the Sidebar (The Tab List)
On the left side of the screen, there is a vertical menu. You can reach it by pressing Tab or F6. This menu includes:
list of 3 items
- Home: The main screen you see first.
- New: To see even more templates.
- Open: To find files on your computer or OneDrive.
list end
Screen Reader Voice: “Tab level 1, New, 2 of 3.”
Pro Tip: Searching for Templates
If you need to make a specific project, like a “Science Report,” you can search for a design online.
list of 2 items
- Press Tab until you hear “Search for online templates.”
- Type your keyword and press Enter.
list end
Screen Reader Voice: “Search for online templates, edit combo.”
